Healing Drama-Trauma is absolutely essential for your transformation journey. But what IS Drama-Trauma and how does it show up in your life?

So, what exactly is drama-trauma? Drama-trauma refers to the emotional and psychological wounds that arise from repeated exposure to chaotic, stressful, or traumatic situations, often rooted in early life experiences. These experiences can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and disconnected from our true selves. They manifest in our present lives as recurring patterns of stress, conflict, and emotional turmoil.

How Drama-Trauma Shows Up in Your Life

Drama-trauma can show up in various aspects of our lives. Here are a few common signs (though, obviously, not all of them):

1.       Career: Feeling unfulfilled or constantly stressed at work, experiencing repeated conflicts with colleagues, or struggling with imposter syndrome. How many of us work with someone who is narcissistic or manipulative and we continue to people-please just to avoid conflict?

2. Relationships: Patterns of conflict, miscommunication, or feeling emotionally distant from loved ones. You might also find yourself attracting partners who mirror unresolved issues. How many of us have dated the same type of person over and over, repeating patterns of abuse, neglect, or childhood trauma? How many of us date people who are just like our parents?

3. Personal Growth: A sense of stagnation, where you struggle to move forward despite your best efforts. This could show up as feeling stuck in unhealthy habits, negative self-talk, self-sabotage, perfectionism, or a lack of motivation.

Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward healing.

Identifying Drama-Trauma Patterns

Let's start with an exercise to help you identify where drama-trauma patterns might be showing up in your life. This is a simple journaling practice.

1. Find a quiet space: You may do this journaling exercise while in meditation, or at the beginning of your day before getting out of bed, or at the end of your day when you’re just getting into bed.

2. Reflect on your day-to-day experiences: Ask yourself, 'Where do I feel most stressed or emotionally triggered?' Write down any situations, people, or recurring thoughts that come to mind. Write freely and write the first thing that pops into your mind. Don’t worry about writing in full sentences or making the page nice and neat. Just get it out onto the paper.

3. Identify patterns: When you’ve finished writing, look for common themes in your answers. Do you notice certain triggers or recurring scenarios?

Take your time with this exercise. Awareness is a powerful first step in breaking free from these patterns.

Compassionate Clearing Technique

Next, let's explore a technique for compassionately beginning to clear these patterns. This is a gentle meditation practice.

1. Sit in a comfortable position: Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, noticing how your body will relax on each exhale.

2. Bring to mind a stressful situation: Gently recall a recent event where you felt overwhelmed or triggered.

3. Observe without judgment: Notice the emotions and physical sensations that arise. You don’t not have to get pulled back into the emotions. Just allow them to be PRESENT without trying to change or suppress them. If it helps, you may imagine placing the emotions in a basket beside you so you can sit WITH them but not be IN them.

4. Send compassion to yourself: Place a hand over your heart and silently repeat, 'I am safe. I am loved. I am healing.' Imagine sending loving energy to the parts of yourself that are hurting. Repeat the mantra, ‘I am safe. I am loved. I am healing’ over and over until you feel a slight shift in energy or the emotion.

Practice this meditation regularly to start releasing the emotional charge from these experiences. You may choose to leave the emotions in the basket instead of bringing them with you when you come out of the meditation.

Remember, recognizing and clearing drama-trauma patterns is a journey and it won’t happen in one day or by doing these exercises once.  You don't have to go it alone.
